Whistle While We Work!

Elections for President and Secretary will be held at the beginning of the meeting.

Baby hats for Soin Medical, Hats and Scarves for our service men and women, and, of course, our Learn to Knit kits… Miami Valley Knitting Guild members are amazingly good at sharing our time and talents! And, this summer has been one to remember! At Carillon Park’s Mini Maker Fest in July, our Learn to Knit Kits were being used almost as fast as we could make them! Then came the Celtic Fest, and additional calls for baby hats from Soin. And now, colder weather is soon to make an appearance, meaning our service men and women will need the warmth that we can provide.

Past experience has shown that our dedicated knitters produce more charity items when the yarn and patterns are pre-packaged in a kit. And, we need more Learn to Knit kits for the Wool Gathering. Hence, the need for a Charity Work meeting. Please join us on September 6th where we will break into groups to facilitate assembly of Charity and Learn to Knit kits!

“So let’s whistle while we work it
And smile while we’re knitting
And whistle while we work it”

Bust’a Stash!

yarn.stash

We’ve all been there. The stash is taking on a life of its own, creeping around the closet door….inching its way out from under the bed….claiming its own seat on the living room sofa. Before it up and demands control of the remote, Something Must Be Done. It is time for a stash bust.

But how? What do you do with that one lonely skein that is too short on yardage, too feltable, and too pretty to give up on? What do you do with the seemingly infinite supply of leftovers; not long enough for a project, but not short enough to throw out? What do you do with that pattern you’re just dying to make, but there is absolutely zero yarn in your stash that is suitable? (Seriously, zero yarn—even after going through the yarn that somehow found its way into the kitchen pantry.)

Join us August 2nd as we take an out-of-the-box look at stash busting. We’ll show you some creative and inventive ways to approach both yarn and patterns to make stash busting a frolic in the park. Feel free to bring in some examples of your own creative stash busting projects!

Who were the big-name attendees? What did she see at the fashion shows? What is it like to attend a Stiches conference? Please join us Tuesday May 3, 2016 to hear the latest news, hear about her experiences, see her pictures, and ask her questions!

Everyone is welcome to attend the MVKG meetings.

March 1, 2016: The Ties That Bind

Are you in a Bind??? Please join us on Tuesday March 1st as we explore techniques for Binding Off.
Last month, we worked on various ways to begin our projects. So we are dedicating this meeting to learning and/or improving ways to end our project including the basic, I-cord, 3-needle, tubular, and Jenny’s Surprisingly Stretchy bind offs. A huge “Thank You” to our volunteer instructors for the evening: Mary Joseph, Donna Moore, Linda Zalusky, Lisa Loftin, and Beth Thorowgood.

Some homework is required:

For the 3-needle Bind-off:

Prepare 2 sample swatches on the same size needles with your preferred yarn with the appropriate needle size, leaving the stitches live, and bring a third needle along to use in the bind-off. The swatch should be about 15-20 stitches with an inch or so of length.

For the tubular Bind-off:

Prepare a sample swatch in k1, p1 ribbing. The swatch should be about 20 or so stitches with an inch or so of length. Leave the stitches live to be used in the workshop. Please bring a set of double-point needles the same size as the ones used to create the swatch. Three double-point needles of the same size will be used in the bind-off.

For all other Bind-offs:

Prepare a sample swatch with your preferred yarn with the appropriate needle size. The swatch should be about 15-20 stitches with an inch or so of length. Leave the stitches live to be used in the workshop.

February 2, 2016: Cast Away!

IMG_1708crop Are you ready to Cast Away??? Please join us on Tuesday February 2nd as we cast our knitting far and wide!

Over the last few months, there have been several requests for help with different cast-on techniques. We are dedicating this meeting to learning and/or improving our cast-ons. Our program will begin with an overview of 6 different cast-on techniques and the best uses for each. Then, similar to Round-Robin, we will break into groups to learn the different cast-on methods along with any associated tips and tricks, such as learning how to eliminate those pesky dangly strings along the cast-on edge when using the backward loop method and finding out how to determine the length of yarn needed for the long-tail cast on.

Please bring some light colored yarn along with needles and a crochet hook of the appropriate size for your yarn weight.

Our meetings are open to anyone. You don’t have to be a member.

January 5, 2016: Round Robin!!!

Mother Nature has been pretty kind to us so far this winter. If she continues to behave, please join us January 5th for our next Round Robin!! We will have four new skills to learn or improve on. Our fearless leader Elizabeth McDonough will be teaching Brioche, Cyd Bogner will teach the different methods for knitting with beads, Geanie Helfrich will be teaching applied Icord, and Sheila Sagerer will teach picot edgings and bindoffs. Here’s your material list and homework:

Brioche:

With DK, Sport or worsted weight yarn and using the appropriate sized needle, cast on 12 stitches.

Beading:

Knit a small swatch approximately 20 stitches in stockinette using fingering weight yarn for 5-10 rows, do not bind off

Beads size 8/0 or 6/0 or larger

Size 12 or 14 steel crochet hooks appropriate for your bead size (if you have one)

Beading needle for threading (if you have one)

Some beads, crochet hooks, and needle threaders will be on hand for you to try if you do not have any

Icord:

Knit a small swatch approximately 20 stitches in stockinette using any weight yarn for 5-10 rows, do not bind off

Double point needles in appropriate size for your yarn

Picot Edgings/Bindoff:

Knit 2 small swatches approximately 24-32 (or multiples of 4) stitches in stockinette using any weight yarn for 10-15 (1 for the edgings, 1 for the bindoff), do not bind off

Crochet hook in appropriate size for your yarn

Twelve Days of Casting On, or #12daysofcastingon or 12daysofcastingon

All my Christmas knitting is finished! Yay Me!!

(For all of you who read the newsletter, you get the joke…for those of you that don’t get the newsletter, I wrote a small blurb about how I am a selfish knitter who only knits for myself).

Whatever…. 🙂

For those of you that are much nicer knitters than I am, I hope that all of your Christmas knitting is on schedule or finished. I have talked to a couple of overachievers who already have their Christmas knitting cast off, blocked, wrapped and under the Christmas tree. You are probably the same knitters that when someone comes to visit unexpectedly, the house is clean and the beds are made and visitors can go into the bathroom without you having a panic attack. Just don’t open any closet or cabinet doors when you come to visit me…my housekeeping skills fall under the category of “shove it all in a laundry basket and stick it in the laundry room”. That’s why I currently own eighteen laundry baskets.

Okay, I got on Facebook to post about ‪#‎12daysofcastingon‬, and I seem to have diarrhea of the keyboard. Back to my original thought:

Beginning December 26, 2014, I participated in the Twelve Days of Casting On that I read about on the Natural Stitches forum on Ravelry.com (Natural Stitches is a yarn shop in Pittsburg). Since I “naturally” have a personality resembling a lemming, I hopped right on board. And I finished all twelve projects before December 31, 2015!

Quite a few knitters have expressed interest in having our own Twelve Days of Casting On. One of you (cough cough Candace Galloway Laird) already has all twelve of your projects lined up and ready!

Here are the “RULES”:

Cast on a new project every day beginning on December 26, and ending on January 6.

Here is the modification to the “RULES”:

Some of your “new” projects that you “cast on” can be works in process.

Finish all twelve projects prior to December 31, 2016.

My plan is to include four WIPs, and then to cast on eight new projects. I did the same thing last year: one day I would cast on a new project, the next day I would work on the WIP. By the time January 6 ended, I had twelve active projects lined up.

Why would you do something so crazy as putting new projects on the needles? Because it is liberating. There were a few patterns that I always wanted to knit, but never cast on because I had too much other knitting to get finished. But if I cast them on, the project was there waiting for me when I finished something else.

This is not as crazy as knitting a sweater every month, or writing a novel every month or cleaning your house every month. You can cast on twelve dishclothes, twelve pairs of socks, twelve scarves, twelve hats….whatever you want to cast on. You can knit other projects in between the original twelve.

Tag your project in ravelry with 12daysofcastingon (if you don’t know how to tag, just ask me).

Use the hashtag #12daysofcastingon on Instagram and Facebook.

More details to come. Knitters, get your needles ready!!!

December 1, 2015: Holiday Party

Santa Knitting

It’s that time of year again! Join us December 1st for our annual Holiday Carry-In for some wonderful food without having to do a lot of dishes afterwards! MVKG will provide fried and roasted chicken. If your last name begins with A-M, please bring a side dish to share; if your last name begins with N-Z, please bring a dessert to share.

To help us get to know each other and our many new members better, join us in a fun game of “FIBER? Oh!” (an amusing take-off of BINGO for Fiber-lovers) with prizes, camaraderie, and laughter. We hope to see you there!

Since the likelihood that we will be able to have a January meeting is historically pretty slim (we’re watching you Mother Nature!!), January’s meeting will be a Round Robin Learning session. We are looking for volunteers to host learning tables to teach other members a new stitch or skill. Please contact a member of the Program committee (Sheila Sagerer, JoAnn Woodcock, Geanie Helfrich and Cyd Bogner) if you are willing to host a table.
